If you’re new to a plant-based diet (or even if you’re not), vegan burgers make a quick and easy weeknight meal when you don’t have time to whip up something fancy. Unfortunately, most of the vegan burgers found in your grocer’s freezer are less than satisfying on their own. Can you imagine anything more boring than a dry, bland veggie burger sandwiched between two buns? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
While a plain patty isn’t exactly a party in your mouth, there’s no reason to cut veggie burgers from your shopping list. With a few sauces, toppings and tidbits, you can turn an everyday sandwich into a tasty and satisfying meal. It doesn’t take much effort, either. A little bit of creativity goes a long way when it comes to adding a savory, sweet or spicy kick to every vegan’s favorite freezer staple. Here are a few delicious ideas for transforming a bland vegan burger into a mouthwatering masterpiece.
Hawaiian BBQ Vegan Burger
I don’t know about you, but I love BBQ sauce on just about everything. Vegan burgers included! Smear some on your veggie patty and top with grilled pineapple rings. You can also add some finely diced jalapenos if you’re feeling bold.
Italian Marinara Vegan Burger
Think of it as a meatball sub, but swap the meatballs with a veggie patty. Generously top your vegan burger with marinara sauce and vegan mozzarella. Then, pop it in the broiler until it gets all melty.
Spicy Southwest Vegan Burger
Creamy and flavorful, a dollop of guacamole can take your vegan burger to the next level. Adding a spoonful of spicy red salsa and a sprinkle of vegan cheese is optional, but totally recommended.
Veggie Delight Vegan Burger
Choose your own adventure! First, smear your vegan burger with hummus. Then load it with whatever veggies you have on hand. Cucumber, red onion, tomato, avocado, alfalfa sprouts – the options are limitless.
Mac and Cheese Vegan Burger
Warning: This one is a bit indulgent. If you have any leftover vegan macaroni and cheese in the fridge (get our recipe here), reheat and smear it on your vegan burger for plant-based take on a BBQ classic.
Mediterranean Vegan Burger
If you love all things savory and salty, try topping your vegan burger with flavors native to the sun-soaked Mediterranean region. We’re thinking sundried tomatoes with green or black olive tapenade. Yum.
Of course, these are just some loose suggestions for how you can transform an everyday vegan burger into a culinary work of art. There are countless ways you can get creative in the kitchen!
