5 Inspiring Vegan Documentaries on Netflix

    Dec 19, 2014 · by Kate Kasbee · Modified: Dec 16, 2014

foodWe’re right in the thick of the holiday shopping season. Are you exhausted yet? To be honest, I’m a little burnt out on dealing with traffic, packed parking lots, and frenzied shoppers at Trader Joes – and all other stores for that matter. Part of me feels like throwing in the towel and hibernating until the New Year when everyone has finished buying (and returning) their holiday gifts. But alas, a girl has to eat. So I’ll resort to finishing my Christmas shopping online and brave the grocery store a few more times before things go back to normal.

Amidst the craziness of the holiday season, many of us often feel depleted of two things: spending money and time for relaxation. I know I’m not the only one feeling the pinch! Yes, the holidays are all about giving, but that does come with limitations. You have to take care of yourself or you won’t truly enjoy the most wonderful time of the year. That’s where Netflix comes in. When I have a free night, there’s nothing better than spending a few hours relaxing on the couch and watching a movie. Even better if that movie is free!

With this in mind, I thought I’d compile a list of my favorite movies to get you through these chilly December nights. Of course, they’re all about food. What did you expect? You are reading the Well Vegan blog, after all! Treat yourself to a night of relaxation and learn about all the wonderful things a vegan meal plan can do by watching these inspiring vegan documentaries on Netflix.

    1. Forks Over Knives (2011)
This documentary examines the claims that health problems like diabetes, obesity, and heart disease can be controlled and even reversed by eating a vegan meal plan free of processed foods. A must-see for anyone considering switching to a plant-based diet.
    1. Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead (2010)
Joe Cross is 100 pounds overweight and suffers from a debilitating autoimmune disease. In an effort to stop taking medication and achieve a balanced lifestyle, Joe decides to only drink fresh fruit and vegetable juice for 60 days. This documentary chronicles his journey.
    2. Vegucated (2010)
In this documentary, three hardcore carnivores agree to adopt a plant-based diet for six weeks in an effort to improve their health. Anyone who recently switched to a vegan meal plan will identify with the struggles and successes the participants deal with.
    1. Food, Inc. (2008)
This provocative, Oscar-nominated documentary exposes the unfortunate truths about corporate farming. The gist of the film is that agribusiness produces unhealthy food in a way that is environmentally unsustainable and abusive of both animals and humans.
    2. Hungry for Change (2012)
This documentary reveals the deceptive strategies the diet and weight loss industry uses to keep consumers coming back for more “diet,” “fat-free” and “sugar-free” processed foods. Anyone trying to live a healthier lifestyle will find this flick inspiring.
