Fall is, without a doubt, my favorite time of year. I’ve already busted out my favorite sweaters and pinned a bunch of new vegan soups and stews on Pinterest. Plus, it’s finally chilly enough outside for me to roast veggies without sweating to death in my kitchen. Is anyone else as excited about this as I am?
In addition to switching up my wardrobe and roasting more vegetables than one person can eat, I always look forward to going to the pumpkin patch each fall. From running through the corn maze, to picking out a pumpkin, to getting totally spooked in a haunted house, the entire experience makes me feel like a little kid again.
Of course, no experience at the pumpkin patch is complete without eating some of the delicious food on offer. To say my tastebuds have evolved since I was a child is quite the understatement. Instead of going for corn dogs and apple cider donuts, I set my sights on plant-based, seasonal foods that are healthy and satisfying. As it turns out, we vegans have a lot of choices!
If you find yourself tempted to indulge in a basket of cheese curds or a slice of pie at the pumpkin patch this fall, try one of these vegan-friendly options instead.
Roasted Sweet Corn
If you like corn on the cob, you’re in for a real treat. Roasted sweet corn is a staple at nearly every pumpkin patch. Unless it’s clearly stated that the corn is made vegan, you’ll need to request that oil, rather than butter, is used during roasting process.
Hot Apple Cider
As long as it doesn’t contain caramel, hot apple cider is totally vegan. Be sure to confirm the ingredients, but it shouldn’t contain anything more than fresh apple juice simmered with cinnamon and cloves. Talk about a delicious fall treat!
Pumpkin Seeds
Not only do they taste great, pumpkin seeds also contain a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. You’ll find them at your local grocery store all year round, but they’re particularly good when purchased straight from the source.
Apples
How about a delicious piece of fresh fruit to snack on as you wander through the pumpkin patch? Apples are absolutely delicious this time of year, and most places have a wide variety to choose from. You’ll probably want to take a bag home with you!
Soft Pretzels
Disclaimer: Not every soft pretzel is vegan. Some producers add butter or margarine to their dough, so you should inquire about the ingredients before eating. Even if the dough is vegan, don’t hesitate to request a freshly baked pretzel sans the salt and buttery topping.
