Spring has been dragging its heels in many parts of the country (snow in April? Really?), but the warmer weather will soon be here to stay. If you’re like the majority of Americans – 62 percent to be exact – you’re probably thinking about doing a major cleaning of your home and office to welcome the new season with a sparkling living environment and an organized workspace.
If you recently adopted a vegan meal plan and are gradually phasing out pantry items and personal products that don’t align with your healthy new lifestyle, now is a great time to do an overhaul of your cleaning supplies, too. After all, why spend money on cleaning products that introduce toxic chemicals into your living space and harm animals in the process? Yuck.
In an effort to make your home as clean as your diet, here are some green and vegan ways you can get your spring cleaning done this season.
Make your own vegan cleaning products
All Purpose Surface Cleaner
Toss your Clorox in the trash and clean your kitchen and bathroom the healthy way. Mix equal parts white vinegar and salt and scrub surfaces with a natural cleaning cloth.
Disinfectant Mix
Mix ½ cup of borax powder with 1 gallon of hot water. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil such as thyme, rosemary, or lavender. Store in a spray bottle.
Furniture Polish
Make your wood pieces shine by using a mixture of 1 cup of lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and 1 tablespoon of water. Lightly apply to furniture using a soft cloth, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then buff.
No-Streak Glass Cleaner
Say “goodbye” to your bottle of Windex. You can achieve sparkling mirrors and windows without chemicals by combining ¼ cup of undiluted white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, and 1 quart of warm water and dividing the mixture amongst spray bottles. For a lint-free shine, wipe dry with some crumpled newspaper or a coffee filter.
Tile and Grout
You can make your bathroom tile so fresh and so clean, clean by mixing 1 cup of water and 3 cups of baking soda into a paste. Use a toothbrush to scrub the paste into the grout.
